Ward Clerk Micro-Credential Program
In Partnership with the IERHA
Robertson College and Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority (IERHA) have partnered to launch a specialized Ward Clerk program designed to fill a critical need in our health system. This collaboration is an opportunity for people to gain new professional skills and find meaningful work in a healthcare setting, ensuring operational excellence and enhanced patient support across IERHA’s healthcare facilities.
Program Description
This Ward Clerk training provides students with the required tools and skills needed to work in a variety of healthcare settings, from hospitals to long-term care facilities.
Program Outcomes
- Demonstrate how to transcribe doctor’s notes and orders.
- Demonstrate ward clerk procedures with consistency and accuracy.
- Maintain accurate patient/resident/clients' records.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient/resident/client information.
- Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with other healthcare team members.
Topics of study include:
Medical Terminology, Basic Human Structure, Diseases and Disorders - 30 hours
This is an introductory module on medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of the human body. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of medical terminology, including word components, definitions, spelling, and pronunciation, using the system approach as well as basic anatomy and physiology.
Ward Clerk Procedural and Professional Skills - 10 hours
This module provides the knowledge and skills needed to accurately manage the admission, transfers, and discharge procedures for patients. The curriculum also integrates essential clinical and administrative competencies, including post-mortem procedures, supply procurement, and the management of daily diagnostic tests, filing, and infection control. Students will train in emergency response protocols and specialized service coordination.
Patient Electronic or Paper Charts - 60 hours
This module provides the foundational knowledge of medications and classifications required to proficiently transcribe various medical directives. Students will gain expertise in processing physician, nursing treatment, dietary, medication, laboratory, and diagnostic imaging orders. Particular emphasis is placed on patient chart management, including the precise assembly and maintenance of medical forms.
Ward Clerk Practicum - 80 hours
The practicum is an essential part of a learner’s program. It is both a certification requirement and an extension of course learning. During practicum, students apply the skills, theories, and concepts learned during the course in an entry-level work experience situation.
